How Safe is Your Hospital?

In spring 2023, The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit healthcare watchdog, released hospital safety grades for 35 hospitals in Maryland, commending several for their top-notch patient safety protocols. However, the national average risk of deadly infections remains alarmingly high, with rates of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), central line-associated bloodstream infections, and catheter-associated urinary tract infections showing an uptick compared to pre-pandemic levels.

The report also highlighted a concerning decline in patient experience measures, particularly in communication from doctors. The Leapfrog Group emphasizes that these findings should act as a clarion call for hospitals to redouble their commitment to patient safety and bolster their resilience, as infections like these can pose life-threatening risks for certain patients.

Among Maryland hospitals, six received an exemplary A grade, while 13 earned a B grade, 14 received a C grade, and only two were rated D. None of the hospitals in Maryland received an F grade.
